Stinson LLP Of Counsel Shu Chen, Ph.D. is featured in the Law360 article, "Stinson Adds Engineering Pro To Patent Team In DC," which highlights her recent arrival at the firm, her advanced engineering background, and the technical depth she brings to Stinson's intellectual property and technology practice.

The article highlights Dr. Chen's path from earning her master's degree and doctorate in electrical engineering at Tufts University to building her patent practice. Dr. Chen told Law360 that her doctoral training taught her how to approach unfamiliar and complicated technical problems, challenge assumptions and communicate ideas precisely — skills that "translate remarkably well into patent practice."

Dr. Chen also discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence across industries, noting that AI is becoming "a horizontal technology" with increasingly broad application. "Increasingly, AI is incorporated into medical devices, cybersecurity, manufacturing, communications, enterprise software, robotics and many other areas," Dr. Chen said. "For patent attorneys, AI is becoming less [of] a sophisticated category. Now, it's increasingly part of the technology vocabulary we need to understand across industries."

Dr. Chen focuses her practice on patent strategy for technology-driven companies. She regularly advises clients on the intellectual property considerations that accompany product development and market growth, including patent landscape analyses, product mapping, design-around strategies, licensing and potential infringement and invalidity issues. Her practice also extends to trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, publications and open-source issues. She earned her J.D. from George Washington University Law School and her M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Tufts University.
