Shu helps technology-driven companies turn innovation into intellectual property strategies that support product development, competitive positioning and long-term business value.
Overview
Shu focuses her practice on intellectual property strategy, with a particular emphasis on developing and managing patent portfolios for software-driven and emerging technologies. With a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, she brings a deep technical understanding to her work across artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud infrastructure, streaming and video technologies, distributed systems, robotics, advanced electronics, medical devices, network security and encryption. She works closely with engineering and business teams to identify and prioritize innovations, align patent filings with product roadmaps and commercialization plans, and build portfolios that support broader business objectives.
Shu's practice encompasses the full patent lifecycle, from invention harvesting and patent drafting and prosecution through portfolio development, freedom-to-operate analysis and strategic IP counseling. She conducts patent landscape analyses and product-mapping assessments, develops infringement and invalidity positions, and advises clients on potential risks and strategies related to product launches, market expansion, design-arounds and licensing. She also supports intellectual property litigation and transactional matters and has experience representing patent owners and challengers in proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
In addition to patent matters, Shu advises clients on trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, publications and open-source issues as part of broader intellectual property strategy. Her experience working with engineering teams and in-house counsel allows her to translate emerging and highly technical technologies into practical IP strategies aligned with clients' business objectives. She also works with international businesses on U.S. patent matters, drawing on her experience with global patent portfolios and foreign prosecution to help clients address intellectual property considerations as they enter or expand in the U.S. market.
